Putting Fun back in

I hit a hard rock a while back. Color scheme and overall look. I went for a mechanical approach and tried to borrow from life. It took a REAL long time to finish a background. I took a week off to practice coloring and learning about cartoon backgrounds, and now I feel more loose and spirited.

before-and-after

The new stuff I colored has a lot more mood and tone to it. It doesn’t look as flat. And, it’s faster to make.

June 24

A lot of new developments. The project is now focused on making a clean version of the trailer. The trailer itself will determine the overall look of the film.

June 1st - Milestones

Milestones
-Animated a complete sequence
-Figuring out the color style and animation
-Created a system to gauge the size of the project
-Weekly backups turning this project into almost 15 gbs
-Laid out a foundation of placeholder files in preparation of art and color

The Month of May
I discovered that I typically average about 4 hours a day working on this project. I am also discovering that the more time I spend just worrying about 2 seconds of animation, the less of a gain it’ll receive. A reminder; It’s more important to have something physical and just created rather than having something perfect from the start.

Score
This score is calculated from the month of May 21st to June 1st.

color-scheme 01-00a 04-color-scheme

Color examples. The top one with the various thumbnails is what I am using to reinforce the idea of strong colors and silhouettes for characters behind texture-faded backgrounds.

The image with the Castle is how I want the Intro chapter to look like, but I’m still working on it.

The bottom one with the purple cat is how the overall film will look like. Black outline characters in front of vector-ish backgrounds. Influenced by Samurai Jack, LoZ : Windwaker, and Chowder. Bright colors, textures, and brush strokes will achieve that effect.

For anybody that’s interested, I made a layout sheet of all the work that’s ahead of me. I broken my 28 minute film into various pieces to organize my animation.

28 minute film; broken into
13 Chapters (each lasting about 1 to 3 minutes); broken into
324 Sequences (each lasting about 5 to 20 seconds);
broken into A LOT OF THINGS TO DO.

Checksheet__resizeforblogHere’s how I organized them.

I broke it up into categories such as sketch and color for the ARTWORK files. I also broke it into categories for the ANIMATION files.

Also note the little tick boxes. I tick it off when it’s complete.  There is a total of 22 of these sheets (11 for Art, 11 for Animation)

I have concluded that there are 1620 tick boxes for each department. (I don’t count the last category. So 5 * 324 Sequences)

So like an RPG, I’ll get stronger every time I tick a box! Except instead of fighting monsters, I’m drawing and coloring.
I’ll start including the tickbox countdown in the blog.
